Eingemauert! (2009)

For the 20th anniversary of the fall of the inner German border, Deutsche Welle commissioned ART+COM to create a short documentary visualising the wall. Parts of the frontier areas in Berlin and Saxony-Anhalt have been virtually reconstructed to engender comprehension of the barrier and it‘s duplicitous past.

The ten-minute tour starts with a patrol ride along the Berlin wall in a typical Eastern military vehicle, then shows the defences in detail and finally guides the viewer to the border area in Hötensleben, Saxony-Anhalt. With the help of historians, border installations were recreated, true to the detail, depicting how West and East Germany were separated in the 1980s. Mats with sharp nails, alarm wires, and spring guns – the animation illustrates different devices used to prevent people from escaping the East. A realistic picture is also drawn of no man’s land, an area that was never accessible to the public.

The HD-Animations are part of the documentary “Walled in! The inner German Border” and have been broadcasted worldwide by DW-TV in German, English, Arabic and Spanish. Moreover, it will be shown at the Berlin Wall Foundation memorial on Bernauer Straße in Berlin to allow visitors, especially of younger generations who don’t know the wall first-hand, to experience the wall virtually. The movie will also be integrated into German school education.
