08.09.2006 | ART+COM at Venice Biennial

From September 10 to November 19 at the 10th Venice Biennial for Architecture, ART+COM and architects Hoyer, Schindele, Hirschmüller und Partner will present the “Reactive Gap House”.

The German Pavilion’s focus on the over-all theme of “Cities. Architecture and Society” is put on “Convertible Cities”. It examines stimulating conversions in existing urban space situations that enrich the dynamics and creativity of city life. Exemplary projects illustrate the exiting tensions that densification and transformation exert on architecture and the urban fabric, as well as the sustainable use of the available potential of a “vertically open” periphery for new working and living environments.

The “Reactive Gap House” is no stranger to this topic. This architectural and media concept study meets the challenge of narrow building gaps typical of Berlin’s construction during the Industrial Revolution. ART+COM’s solution uses the given space completely and overcomes the lighting problem by using illuminated ceilings – LEDs behind opaque glass. Connected to a sensory system, the ceilings react to movement below them. Inhabitants can also control the lighting in accordance to their moods.
